Larry R. Hofer, age 80, of Rankin, passed away on Monday, December 20, 2021 at his home. He was born on July 22, 1941 in Rankin, the son of Eli and Fern (Boyce) Hofer. Larry married Sue Goin on May 11, 1963 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Rankin. She preceded him in death on November 9, 2019. He is survived by two sons, Randall Alan (Tonna) Hofer of Hoopeston and Darrin Michael (Nancy) Hofer of Loda; one daughter, Tara Nicole (Steve) Shields of Hoopeston; three sisters, Virginia Barr of Rankin, Patricia (Mike) Bushue of Rankin, and Connie (Tom) Cain of Carmel, IN; two sisters-in-law, Judy Hofer and Norma Hofer; twelve grandchildren, Sadie Hofer, Lucas Hofer, Nick Hofer, Allison Hofer, Abby Hofer, Alyssa Hofer, Caleb (Sharim) Shields, Chloe Shields, Jacob Shields, Mackenzie Shields, Josslyn Shields and Maverick Shields; one great-grandchild, Ezekiel Shields; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Along with the love of his life, Sue, Larry was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Gordy Hofer, Marvin (JoAnn) Hofer and Duane Hofer; and a brother-in-law, Dwayne Barr. Throughout his life, Larry was a Volunteer Firefighter and worked in Civil Service at Chanute Air Force Base for over 40 years. He also worked at the VA Hospital in Danville and Hope for Children in Rantoul. He owned his own Refrigeration/Electrical business, as well as the former car wash in Rankin. Larry was a member of the Rankin Lions Club and was on the Rankin School Board for several years. Larry was passionate about his grandkids and spending time with family and friends. He was a master do-it-yourselfer, and never met a repair or project he couldn’t handle. He enjoyed camping with family, watching his grandkids perform and play sports, and following politics. His favorite pastime was visiting and having a beer with his brothers, good friends, and any of his relatives. He cherished the conversations with the people he loved. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 26, 2021 from 4:00pm until 6:00pm, at Cox-Knapp Funeral Home in Rankin (130 North Main Street). Additional visitation will be on Monday, December 27, 2021 from 10:00am until the 11:00am funeral service, also at Cox-Knapp Funeral Home in Rankin. Burial will follow the service at Rankin Union Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Rankin Lions Club.
